The Search for the Tower of Anemas

Where, then, was the Tower of Anemas? Unfortunately, at this stage of our knowledge, no answer can be provided that fully satisfies the question. There are several possible theories, but none can be confirmed with certainty based on the current evidence.

Possible Solutions to the Mystery

1. Tower L as the Tower of Isaac Angelus

One of the simplest solutions is that Tower L, which has an inscription honoring Isaac Angelus, may indeed be the tower built by that emperor. Over time, this tower would have suffered significant damage and undergone repairs, leading to alterations in its original appearance. Towers N and S could then have together formed the prison of Anemas, with Tower S being added later Can Tower S Be the Prison of Anemas.

2. Tower N as the Tower of Anemas

Another theory is that Tower N is the Tower of Anemas, and Tower S is the Tower of Isaac Angelus. Supporters of this idea point to the cells inside Tower N, which are accessed through narrow vaulted passages. This could suggest that the Tower of Isaac Angelus was actually a renovation and expansion of the original Tower of Anemas.

3. Tower L as the Tower of Anemas

Despite the inscription of Isaac Angelus on Tower L, some might still argue that Tower L is the Tower of Anemas, and that Towers N and S, with the addition of S, are the Tower of Isaac Angelus. This view would ignore the inscription on Tower L, but suggest that it was originally the Tower of Anemas Private Fun Tour Istanbul.

Returning to Earlier Views

If none of the above theories seem convincing, we may have to revisit earlier opinions about the Tower of Anemas. Before Dr. Paspates made his discovery of the chambers next to Towers N and S, the general belief was that Towers N and S together formed the Tower of Isaac Angelus, and the Tower of Anemas was located in the Heraclian Wall.

This view was also supported by Patriarch Constantins, who wrote:

“The Tower of Anemas still exists. On its side facing the Holy Well of Blachernae, it has a large window, with a smaller one above.”

The mystery of the Tower of Anemas remains unsolved. While there are several theories about its location and identity, more research is needed to draw definitive conclusions. For now, it is likely that we will continue to consider multiple possible solutions to this fascinating historical question.
